The problem
There is a huge problem with the food industry. We are at risk of losing many varieties of fruit and vegetables, due to modern seed manufacturing. This loss of biodiversity to the planet is devasting. Not only does the choice of seed begin to narrow, but the genetic pool from which they are bred declines. This results in the inability to adapt to different environmental conditions, something imperative that crops are going to need to be able to do in the future. Once a variety disappears, it is likely it is gone forever.
The solution we used
By seed saving, we can have control over our own food. It allows our varieties to adapt to our own specific conditions. We are committed to only growing heritage and heirloom seeds, to promote diversity. We are able to grow a broad spectrum of species such as 19 varieties of tomatoes, purple carrots and tromboncino squash.
Implementation
We have developed an amazing cycle using seed saving. Every child has the opportunity plant, weed, save and harvest seeds. They then are able to enjoy their efforts as the food produced is then used in the school kitchen and enjoyed by all the children for lunch. Children have also got access to a their own indoor and outdoor kitchen where they can use their produce to develop their cooking skills. Food education also continues at home, with the children selling the plants to parents and encouraging them to buy seedlings and grow them at home. Children being actively part of the process of producing food is critical, so they know where their food comes from and are able to care about issues surrounding food sustainability.
