The problem

In the hustle and bustle of twenty-first century Europe, our student-led project, "Local Teas for a Sustainable Lifestyle," aims to address the prevalent issue of imported food and products. Recognizing that these goods are often transported halfway around the world in an environmentally unfriendly manner, our team seeks to raise awareness that the finest teas don't have to come from distant lands. Instead, they can be crafted using locally-sourced ingredients, promoting sustainability and fostering a deeper connection to our environment.

The solution we used

The primary goal of our project is to inform fellow students and people in general about the benefits of locally-sourced teas. By providing information on the best combinations of herbs and their ideal proportions, we empower individuals to make environmentally conscious choices. Additionally, we aim to engage families and communities in herb-gathering walks, making the activity accessible and enjoyable for people of all ages.

Implementation

Exploring Local Flavors

The heart of our project lies in encouraging people to explore the natural treasures in their local surroundings. By taking a simple stroll into the countryside, participants can gather herbs like rose hips, mint leaves, and other flavorful ingredients. Drawing from our team's experience, we recommend delightful combinations such as mint, raspberry, and blackberry leaves or rosehips with strawberry sage leaves. For those interested in natural remedies, a blend of nettle, lemon balm, and dandelion proves to be a perfect choice.

Tools and Equipment Needed:

  • Our project emphasizes simplicity, requiring minimal tools and equipment:
  • No specialized equipment is needed, just a pair of dexterous hands.
  • A hot air dryer can facilitate herb drying, but a heater is a viable alternative.
  • While a mortar and pestle can aid in herb preparation, it's not essential.
  • Empty tea bags, readily available in pharmacies, are perfect for the final step of brewing the tea.
