How difficult it is to implement your project

Difficult

The problem

Maintaining cleanliness along the Danube River is challenging due to limited access for refuse lorries, making it difficult to collect litter efficiently. Litter in and around the river not only pollutes the water but also jeopardizes the Danube as a cherished recreational area. Additionally, it is vital to raise awareness among students about environmental protection, encouraging them to take responsibility for keeping our surroundings clean for both people and wildlife.

The solution we used

Our solution was to organize a collective effort to clean up the rubbish along the banks of the Danube. As students of Vienna Business School Schönborngasse, we felt a strong responsibility to contribute to the cleanliness of our local environment. We aimed to motivate our peers to join the project and actively participate in litter collection, demonstrating our commitment to preserving Vienna’s natural beauty.

Implementation

As the "Clean Squad," we coordinated a waste collection event on the Danube Island, a popular local spot. Here's how we executed our plan:

  1. Organizing the Event:
    • We scheduled a dedicated morning for the clean-up activity and rallied 80 classmates to join us.
    • To encourage participation, we announced a friendly competition: the group that collected the most rubbish would win a prize.
    • We promoted the event through posters, social media, and classroom announcements to ensure high engagement.
  2. On the Day:
    • Armed with gloves, bags, and a strong sense of purpose, we set out to clean the Danube Island.
    • Teams spread out across the area, picking up every piece of litter they could find.
    • By the end of the morning, we had filled an impressive number of rubbish bags.
  3. Impact and Recognition:
    • Our efforts not only cleaned a significant stretch of the Danube Island but also fostered a sense of pride and community among the students.
    • The event was a success, and our story even caught the attention of the local newspaper, bringing further awareness to the importance of environmental stewardship.

Through this initiative, the "Clean Squad" not only helped preserve the Danube as a clean and enjoyable space but also inspired our peers to take active roles in environmental protection. The event highlighted the power of collective action and demonstrated that even small efforts can have a significant impact on our community and environment.
